AI Research Projects for High School Students

At AI Natives, high school students carry out original research that combines artificial intelligence with the subject they care about most, from medicine and robotics to finance, sports and law. Working one-on-one with an expert mentor, each student chooses a research question, collects real data, and builds and tests machine learning models. Finally, they write a research paper they can publish and feature in their college applications.

This portfolio brings together examples of projects developed with AI Natives mentors. For example, students have predicted freezing of gait in Parkinson’s disease, detected space debris to protect satellites, and identified undervalued football players across European leagues. Others have tested low-cost eye-tracking tools for ALS patients. In every case, the project starts from the student’s own curiosity and ends with a concrete result, such as a paper, a working model, a web app or a dashboard.

Why students choose AI research mentorship

Original research matters because it shows universities what a student can do on their own: ask a meaningful question, work with real data and explain the results clearly. So far, we have supported over 120 research projects. As a result, 91% of our students have published a research paper, and 96% plan to feature their project in their college applications.

However, you don’t need advanced coding experience to start. Instead, mentors adapt each project to the student’s level, whether they are writing their first lines of Python or already training neural networks. In addition, sessions are flexible, so the project fits around school and other activities. To learn more, explore our mentorship programs, or click the fields below to see real examples.

Many of our students also submit their work to peer-reviewed student journals, such as the National High School Journal of Science.

Not sure which field fits you best? That’s why we offer a free call with a mentor to talk about your project idea.
